Car Care Tips: How to Apply Touch Up Paint

Here at Volvo Cars Warren, we like to provide our consumers with information that helps them properly care for their cars. Dents and scratches are common but can be remedied with touch-up paint. However, it is important to apply touch-up paint carefully for a smooth finish.

You need to choose a touch-up color that matches your vehicle's finish. You can check your car's factory color code that is typically found near the VIN number on the dash. It could also be found on the firewall or radiator core support, or you can search online for your vehicle's color code.

For light scratches, clean the surface with warm soap and water. Prepare the surface by using a sandpaper that is 220 grit or higher. Always try to sand as little as possible, and be sure to clean the surface again when you are finished sanding. You can use a small brush, the end of a match stick, or a toothpick to apply the paint. With deeper scratches, a primer is recommended, and be sure to use a sand paper that is 220 grit or higher before applying the primer and 600 or higher to smooth the primer.
